Wound care treatment offers comprehensive approach

The Queens-Long Island Medical Group’s
Jamaica Estates Medical Office at 180-05 Hill-
side Ave. is home to a unique wound
care outpatient treatment program that uses a
comprehensive approach to the diagnosis and
treatment of chronic non-healing wounds.
The team, led by podiatric surgeon Dr.
Abid-Ali Akram and general surgeon Dr. Evan
Berman, specializes in the treatment of wounds
that fail to heal by conventional methods, by
utilizing advanced therapies and proven clinical
protocols. The program includes individualized
treatment plans and education on prevention,
nutrition, hygiene and exercises.
The wound care program has been suc-
cessful in promoting the healing of wounds
that previously resisted healing and in
reducing amputations. Chronic, non-healing
wounds may result from many factors,
including diabetes, poor circulation, trau-
maand systemic diseases.
“Wounds that are not addressed by a spe-
cialty center may cause health complications
leading to antibiotic-resistant infections and
possible amputation. The wound care team has
successfully reduced the hospitalization rate
for this patient population,” Dr. Akram said.
Physical and occupational therapists pro-
vide individualized treatment to promote
wound healing and a return to normal func-
tion and mobility.
According to Dr. Berman, “In a profes-
sion that’s constantly changing, the goal of
the wound care team has always remained
the same: to advance wound care through
innovative technology and education.”
The staff includes MedicalAssistant/Depart-
ment Coordinator Michelle Persaud, and
Medical Assistants Tracy Trapaga, Belle
Mincey and Tatiana Pastouchenko.
