The Benefits of E-Prescribing

E-prescriptions are computer-generated prescriptions created by your healthcare provider and sent directly to your pharmacy. Instead of writing out your prescription on a piece of paper, your doctor or other healthcare provider enters it directly into his or her computer. Your prescription travels from your doctor or other healthcare provider’s computer to the pharmacy’s computer. E-prescriptions are sent electronically through a private, secure, and closed network so that your prescription information is not sent over the open Internet or as e-mail. E-prescriptions are fast, convenient and legible; it also allows you to save time by having your prescription ready at the pharmacy when you get there.

There are many additional benefits, with e-prescribing, physicians have comprehensive information to ensure that patients receive safe, accurate care, including, formulary and benefit transactions which gives prescribers information about which drugs are covered by a patients prescription drug benefit plan.
Physician also have access to complete medication history transactions which provides prescribers with information about medications a patient is already taking, including those prescribed by other providers, to help reduce the number of adverse drug interactions.


To monitor medication adherence in patients with chronic conditions, the e-prescribing system sends a Fill Status notifications to the physician that allows prescribers to receive an electronic notice from the pharmacy telling them that a patient's prescription has been picked up, not picked up, or has been partially filled.
